Sunday, September 17 - Religion, Rosings, and Renishaw Hall

“Give us Grace Almighty Father, so to pray, as to deserve to be heard, to address thee with our hearts, as with our lips.  Thou art every where present.” -from Jane Austen's evening prayers

8:00 Breakfast at Delta Hotel

9:15 Drive fifteen minutes

10:00 am Sacrament Meeting at Stamford Ward

The Stamford branch had 32 people in a tiny chapel and it was wonderful to worship there with them. We talked with some elderly folks and the Sister Missionaries for a bit after sacrament meeting.

Tennis court in back is overflow parking

Drive 10 minutes

11:30 Burghley House grounds

"But of all the views which his garden, or which the country or kingdom could boast, none were to be compared with the prospect of Rosings." -Pride and Prejudice

Burghley House - “Rosings Park” in the 2005 Kiera Knightly Pride and Prejudice.  There is disabled parking close to the house. Gardens are mostly accessible to wheelchair users. Best views are accessed by walking on the grass field around the house.

Our first site on our Jane Austen tour! Rosings has large wide-open grounds, and we mostly explored the gardens.

How impressive is this house?!

There was a car show going on that my boys would have loved

We enjoyed a nice outdoor lunch at Burghley House Garden Café

Tuna cucumber sandwiches, carrot
butternut squash soup, and scones

Mom's first try of English scones with clotted cream and jam.
I think she's a fan (as I am).

Drive by Teigh Old Rectory

"Observe the closet, cousin Elizabeth. What do you say to that? Is it not the very essence of practicality and convenience? Lady Catherine de Bourgh herself was kind enough to suggest that these shelves be fitted." - Mr. Collins in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice movie

Teigh Old Rectory - Mr. Collins’s and Charlotte's house where Lizzy stayed at Rosings in the 1995 Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice.  Now a B&B.

This was a bit underwhelming and in the tiniest farm town imaginable, but at least we found it.

The "Collins’s" house

How quaint is this thatched-roof farmhouse?

Drive One hour, twenty-five minutes
3:00 Renishaw Hall grounds (no set time on tickets but closes at 4:30)

Elizabeth was delighted. She had never seen a place for which nature had done more, or where natural beauty had been so little counteracted by an awkward taste. They were all of them warm in their admiration; and at that moment she felt, that to be mistress of Pemberley might be something!

Renishaw Hall - “Pemberley” in the 1980 Elizabeth Garvie Pride & Prejudice.

The current owner of Renishaw is Alexandra Sitwell and family. This extraordinary family have lived at Renishaw for over 400 years. The historic gardens, designed in the Italian style, were laid out over 100 years ago and include formal gardens, woodland, lakes and a classical temple. Renishaw also boasts one of the mostly northerly vineyards in Britain.

OH. MY. HEAVENS. We were late in arriving and only had 20 minutes, but it was the BEST 20 minutes! Our jaws were on the ground and we were so excited.  I have dreamed of coming here since I was a teenager and first fell in love with Pride and Prejudice with the 1980 movie.  It was even better in person and we could not believe what we were seeing.  We wanted hours more but were grateful we got to see it at all.  Pictures don't do it justice. Mr. Darcy, I'll be your Elizabeth here anytime.

This is how happy we were to be here!

How stunning are these grounds!
This is my favorite photo of the day.

Gazebo for pet burials

Drive forty minutes
We stopped at The Robin Hood Pub because it's cute.  They had no room for us so we continued on.

Lovely scenes on the way

Drive ten minutes
Hassop Station Rooms on the Monsal Trail (Bed and Breakfast )
One flight of stairs; free parking

Our first Bed and Breakfast.  Pretty cute and comfy and had beautiful fields out our windows.

Every hotel or B&B has its quirks.  This one had our private
bathroom across the hall, and the "breakfast room" was a cafe up the road a bit.
