Thursday, September 21 - Lyme Regis to Peveril Point - The Jurassic Coast

"Anne and Henrietta, finding themselves the earliest of the party the next morning, agreed to stroll down to the sea before breakfast. They went to the sands, to watch the flowing of the tide, which a fine south-easterly breeze was bringing in with all the grandeur which so flat a shore admitted. They praised the morning; gloried in the sea; sympathized in the delight of the fresh-feeling breeze--and were silent..."

"[Dr. Shirley] declares himself, that coming to Lyme for a month, did him more good than all the medicine he took; and, that being by the sea, always makes him feel young again. He declares himself, that coming to Lyme for a month, did him more good than all the medicine he took; and, that being by the sea, always makes him feel young again." - Henrietta in Persuasion

Montacute House – Drive by
'Cleveland' where Marianne was ill in the 1995 Sense & Sensibility. The house is a late Elizabethan three-storey mansion with garden. It was built for Sir Edward Phelips around 1598 and owned by his descendants until the early 20th century. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1927.

"Marianne, please try... I cannot do without you... I've tried to bear everything else. I will try. Please, dearest, beloved Marianne. Do not leave me alone." - Elinor in the 1995 Sense and Sensibility

Drove fifty minutes to Lyme Regis
Lyme Bay features in Persuasion, and Jane Austen will most likely have spent some time here during her visits to the town. Chapters 11-14 of Persuasion are set in the Dorset seaside town of Lyme Regis. The settings of Jane Austen's novels were not usually real places: Bath is one exception; Lyme is another.  Monmouth Beach Car Park has paid parking (credit card). We walked five minutes to The Cobb (wall) where Louisa’s fall in the 1995 and 2007 Persuasion were filmed.

"Louisa...do not be so foolish!" - Captain Wentworth in the 1995 Persuasion

Lovely Lyme!  It was at this point in the day that we
realized Mom's hiking poles were lost.  A sad discovery,
but she just held on to my arm the next few days.

Mom pretending to be Louisa.
"Captain catch me!"

The Cobb

Mom's disabled placard got us the best parking spots.
It saved us many times from parking grief.

More beauty on our drive

We had no idea that this little stop for lunch at a café would be so interesting!
It was surrounded by the cutest farm and also a ruined old abbey.

St. Catherine's chapel on a nearby hill -
part of the monastery

Pulled pork and English-style mac and
cheese with mushrooms

This abbey, like many others, was destroyed by Henry the VIII

On our next Drive, we passed the prettiest little church,  so we had to turn around and check it out. It's called St. Christopher's, and we meet a lady there who was christened at that church 79 years ago.

Prettiest entrance!

Drove forty-five minutes to Lulworth Cove
Lulworth Cove Car Park is £5 for five hours
Three-minute walk to see the Cove

Corfe Castle - Drive by
Corfe Castle was built shortly after the Norman conquest of 1066. Since then, it has seen its fair share of battles, murders and miracles, and been home to kings, knights and a princess. It is now just ruins and is part of the National Trust.

Such a cool old Castle.

Drove fifteen minutes to Peveril Point
We didn't go where I planned as the map didn't reveal that the end of the Point can only be accessed by a private road.  Still saw some pretty views, though.  This was our final coast stop, as we were losing daylight and didn't have time to go to Old Harry Rocks.

Well, the clothes we washed in the tub two nights ago still didn't begin to dry in the air, so we found a laundrette which took a pound coin for every eight minutes of drying time. We parked illegally in a crowded neighborhood street and were grateful for dry clothes.
